SYRACUSE — Dr. Tom Edington, superintendent of the Wawasee Community School Corporation, submitted the following letter to the community in the midst of fears and concerns about the coronavirus:

“We wake up every day to additional news about the coronavirus, including school closures. Wawasee Schools have closed through the end of our spring break, April 12. We’ll re-evaluate and take direction from our local and state officials on any further closing.

“Students and teachers are working on their computers to learn and work with new educational lessons, concepts and assignments. Although teachers and students have access to a world of learning material, it only complements the teacher/student component.

“The time we are experiencing will be long remembered by our students and you for the lessons learned and the memories made. We pray for the safety of our community and that we all take every precaution to avoid the virus.

“Wawasee school buildings are being deep cleaned and will be ready when called to action again. Buildings are only open to essential personnel. We’re making meals for students needing them and delivery of learning packets to those without internet.

“Thanks to all of the community individuals and groups who have assisted with child care, food and other services for our youth during this time. Our Wawasee teachers, classified employees, administration and school board have stretched to fit our suddenly new arrangement.

“It is so gratifying to serve in a community that rises to meet challenges, such as this present time. If we can be of assistance, please call your local school or the central office, (574) 457-3188 during the weekdays.”
